Deleted Article Chapter From Spinsterella: Goth Girl Summer

When I wrote Spinsterella: Goth Girl Summer in 2024, I planned for it to be a light novel that featured pictures, and an article from Gothic Beauties magazine asking: What Happened To Mad Matilda? chronicling everything Matilda did over the course of her vacation. Unfortunately, the book I planned to be 50,000 words and 300 pages became 144,000 words and 666 pages. So I had to cut some things to get it to fit Amazon's requirements for paperbacks. And one of those things was the article that would've been featured with the Gothic Beauties Magazine cover.  Well, I hate to see good content go to waste. So I'm sharing that article here with you now.

Here's the article that would've been featured in with the Gothic Beauties Magazine cover:

What Happened to Mad Matilda?

She was the queen of the Industrial Goth raves. And then she disappeared.

In the 1990s Mad Matilda was One of the most popular hostesses in the Industrial Goth Rave scene. Considered to be the Downtown Julie Brown of the Industrial Goth scene, she was known for her legendary parties that would kick off once she jumped off the makeshift stage of the warehouse where they were hosted.

Mad Matilda was the life of the party from 1991 to 1995. Goths and Normies would travel across the country to go to her parties. Even some celebrities would pop in to join the festivities. Everyone was having fun until Mad Matilda had her last party at VampJam95, the last party Mad Matilda hosted before she mysteriously disappeared.

Years after VampJam 95 people wondered what happened to Mad Matilda. In that time people have speculated about her disappearance from the Goth scene. Some thought she got married and had kids. Others thought she wound up on drugs. And a few thought she died.

What really happened to Mad Matilda? Well, she’s here to tell Gothic Beauties her story.

Mad Matilda is actually Matilda Crowley, a Black girl next door who lives in Harlem. The daughter of a White college professor and a Black human resource manager, she came into the Goth scene in 1989. Living in a real-life horror movie during the crack epidemic, Matilda took a journey into the Goth scene after her brother was shot at a house party and she got suspended from school from for fighting the bullies who tormented her for being light skinned. After meeting a Goth named Lady Diabolique who was attending Columbia University where her father taught during that suspension from school, she decided to become The Black Widow, her take on horror movie characters to combat the real life monsters she encountered in real life such as bullies who harassed her in high school drug dealers who made advances on her.

After overcoming her issues and transferring to a new school, Matilda took on the Goth name Mad Matilda. The Black Widow pendant she wears was given to her by Goth friends who supported her during the hard times she encountered during her babybat years. As Matilda transitioned from being The Black Widow to Mad Matilda, she and her friends planned Raves to give Babybats like the then sixteen-year-old Matilda a safe place to be able to experience the Goth scene since there weren’t many places for people under the age of 18 to attend Goth Nights back then.

Mad Matilda and her friends hosted their raves at a warehouse on 12th Avenue in Harlem after she graduated from high school. It’s there they usually coordinated to be events where babybats could experience the scene and up and coming bands could get an audience for their music. Matilda’s Raves connected lots of babybats to new music and helped many more learn about the Goth scene. However, these events drew the ire of The NYPD and New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani who was looking to eradicate the public nuisance of Mad Matilda as part of his quality-of-life initiative. Ironically it was that initiative that led to the disappearance of Mad Matilda.

On a cold February night in 1995, Mad Matilda was looking to start one of her parties when she found a babybat strung out on ecstasy at in the bathroom of the warehouse where she hosted her events. When she found out a drug dealer was selling drugs at her party, she had him ejected to keep him from selling drugs to other babybats. Unfortunately, that effort to maintain a quality of life at her party led to the drug dealer calling the cops at the precinct. When the police raided the party, Mad Matilda got arrested.

Before her arrest, Matilda had plans to be a part of the Goth scene after she graduated college. She had plans to be a hostess at Goth clubs all across the country. Sadly, those plans got derailed with her arrest. While Matilda was able to make a plea deal to avoid any jail time for hosting her Raves, she needed the help of her parents to get out of the predicament she was in. And as part of that deal with them, she couldn’t be Mad Matilda anymore.

While that arrest ended Mad Matilda’s reign over the Industrial Goth Raves it didn’t stop Matilda from being a part of the Goth scene. As Matilda graduated from Columbia University in 1995 with a degree in economics, she started on a new path in the subculture. The day after coming home after her community service was over, she was watching a Jenny Jones episode and saw how Goths were being mistreated and the scene was misrepresented. It was after watching that episode that she got inspired to become a different kind of role model for Goths. With the help of her parents, she was able to secure a job at a corporation in Manhattan. And for that new role in the Goth scene, she took on a new goth name: Spinsterella.

Matilda sees her transition from Mad Matilda to Spinsterella similar to the DC comic book character Dick Grayson. When Dick Grayson was a child he was Batman’s sidekick Robin. And as he got older, he outgrew being Batman’s partner and became his own hero Nightwing. In some ways Matilda was a sidekick to her best friend Goth Lady Diabolique in her babybat days as a teenager, but as she became a woman, she’s become a Black Widow with her own approaches to Goth and her own style.

In her new role in the Goth scene, Matilda has been working to be an ambassador who presents a positive image of the subculture on the job and off. Recently she began to come out of the office of the company she’s working at to do some modeling for online Goth retailer Gothshop.com, is going to pose for a calendar as Miss October and has also won first place for the Venice Beach Bikini Contest.

What happened to Mad Matilda? She became an older, wiser woman who shows us all how someone can still be Goth as an adult. Many people think Goth is a phase teenagers go through when they’re feeling angsty. However, Matilda is an example of how a person can live a great life and stay spooky in all aspects of it.

Matilda may not be the Queen of the Industrial Goth Raves anymore, but she’s still Goth royalty. As she’s jumped off the makeshift stage of the warehouse and landed on her feet in the world she’s grown up she’s become an Lady with class and style who represents the best of the subculture and the scene.

Spinsterella: Goth Girl Summer is now available in paperback and KindleUnlimited. And if you have a KindleUnlimited Subscription you can read all about Matilda's vacation for free!

For the 10th book in the John Haynes series I commissioned UK artist Des Taylor to design this year’s cover. I’ve always been a fan of Des Taylor’s work and it’s an honor to work with him a second time. The first time we worked together on the cover for Spinsterella: Goth Girl Summer and he created a masterpiece of a cover for that book.

This isn’t the last time I’m working with Des Taylor, his work will be featured in a pin-up in the upcoming Isis; No Goddess is an Island!

As she starts to walk down the path of the straight and narrow towards Salvation, she sets a course for her life on earth as a New Creature in Christ. Is this the start of a new path of greatness for E’steem? Or is she on a road harder than the path to Hell?

E’steem: A New Woman is a flashback story set three days after the events of The Temptation of John Haynes. It details the Devilish Diva’s start on her relationship with Christ and the start of her journey on the road of the side of the angels.

It was a challenge getting all three of these books ready for the market after my heart attack last July. But I thank God I’m still here and I was able to produce books for my 18th year in business.

Along with the cool cover Des Taylor also designed a new logo for SJS DIRECT books that’ll be featured on the back  of them

I’m getting closer to publishing my 100th book!. And I want to thank everyone who supported SJS DIRECT over the last 18 years. We’ve come a long way from the era of hand drawn covers and books with typos to now working with top comic artists and producing books that are near perfect. The books are getting better. Now I’m hoping I can to get the sales and the readership up to see how much things have improved on the SJS DIRECT imprint.

Flashbacks & Filler- Back Feature of E'steem: A New Woman

I almost didn’t get a chance to write this year’s books. In fact, I came this close to leaving this world last year.

Usually I like to talk to the reader and aspiring writers so they can learn what inspired these stories and what the lessons are in them in these back of the book features. But I almost wasn’t able to be here write this book.

In July of 2025 I had a heart attack. And I spent the last six months recovering from the angioplasty surgery. As I had to deal with heart issues, I didn’t have much time to think about writing. Before I had the heart attack which was later diagnosed as heart failure, I had only finished Isis: Runway of Doom, and started writing John Haynes: An Offer He Can’t Refuse, and part of Isis: No Goddess is an Island, and I hadn’t even the faintest idea what the E’steem story for 2025 would be.

For the last seventeen years I’ve been trying to follow God and do what he told me to keep going. Unfortunately, seventeen years of long-term unemployment and the stresses of being out of work, looking for work and running a publishing company and a YouTube channel took its toll on my health. The stress of worrying about trying to make a living off declining book sales and YouTube ad revenue affected not only my mental health, but my physical health. But I’m still trying to obey God. Still trying to keep going.

As I got out of the hospital, I dealt with the diagnoses of heart failure and type 2 diabetes by working on my recovery. In the downtime I returned to the keyboard of my Macbook Pro. I managed to get the John Haynes story finished, and then wrote two E’steem stories. Both revolved around E’steem’s relationship with Christ. The first story I did was about E’steem doing a livestream to talk about how her life had changed. It was essentially a recap story to let new readers know what happened with E’steem in the 20 books she made appearances in.

And the other was chronicling E’steem first days as a New Woman in Christ and the direction she was taking her life in with her relationship with God and John Haynes. A follow up to No Good Deed, this was going to be a flashback story that took place a few days after The Temptation of John Haynes. In that story it would showed how E’steem redefined her relationship with John to start being his helpmeet and set the goals for becoming the woman she always wanted to be.

The livestream story just wasn’t clicking, so I decided to publish the story set right after The Temptation of John Haynes. With it being a flashback story, it’d be like one of those filler comic stories publishers produce when a creator gets sick and can’t get the issues they want to print. One of those stories they have on hand to keep a series in print without gaps

so they don’t have to publish a reprint with a new cover like Fantastic Four Volume #180.

I was already feeling bad that I wasn’t able to publish an Isis book for 2025, and I didn’t want to have another year with gaps in SJS DIRECT Universe books. As I worked to recover from the heart surgery, I managed to finish five books. John Haynes: An Offer He Can’t Refuse, Isis: Runway of Doom, E’steem The Submitted Soul, E’steem: A New Woman and Isis: No Goddess is and Island. I thank God to be blessed to live to be able to finish those stories. And I hope I’ll be around to write more of them in the future.

With a diagnosis of Heart failure, I don’t have much time left in this world. From what I’ve read it may be five years, it may be ten years. But I’m still trying to obey God and keep going. Where I’m going I don’t know. But I’m hoping I can be able to continue sharing my writing with everyone for as long as I can.

Progress Report

It’s been a while since I wrote one of these progress reports. I’ve been super busy writing books and making YouTube videos. Fighting to try to make a living. Working harder for myself than I’ve ever done for an employer.

Book sales have been slow since the end of 2022. And YouTube revenues have been declining from the pandemic days in spite of my best efforts. I thought I could work my way out of it with new books like John Haynes: A Thorne in my Side and Spinsterella: Goth Girl Summer. But as I pushed harder, all I was doing was working myself into an early grave.

Ever since I turned 50, I started having chest pains. What I thought were anxiety attacks over being 50 and still having no job were actually worsening heart issues. And those heart issues turned into a heart attack in the middle of July 2025.

I don’t know if the heart attack was the result of over working, worrying about my not having a job for seventeen years, not being able to achieve my dreams at this point, or my financial situation, or just years of unhealthy eating. It just coulda been all those things but doctors told me my heart wasn’t getting enough oxygen rich blood due to heart failure.

On top of that I was diagnosed as Type 2 diabetic.

The doctors put a stent in my heart and I’ve been recovering and doing rehab. I’ve changed my diet. I don’t know how much time I still have left in this world, but I thank God I’m still here. And I’m doing what I can to try to stay alive.

I was glad to see folks on YouTube and social media did look out for me when they noticed I was off YouTube. I sent them a message from the hospital from my cell phone to let them know what happened. And I thank them all for the support they gave me in cyberspace.

In the six months since my heart attack things are looking positive. My Echocardiogram in November came out with positive results and my A1c at the end of December was 5.4, below the 5.7 that is considered normal. Due to dietary changes, I’ve lost 30 pounds and have gone from 46” waist to a 40” inch waist.

As I’ve been recovering from my heart attack, I’ve managed to complete five books. Isis: Runway of Doom, John Haynes: An offer He Can’t Refuse, E’steem: A New Woman, E’steem: The Submitted Soul and Isis: No Goddess is an Island. However, as I’ve been recovering from my heart attack I’m not working as hard as I did in the past to get these books to the market place. I used to push to get my books out for the summer reading season, but these days I’m taking things slower. I can’t work myself back into a grave. I’ve accepted people ain’t interested in reading much these days. And most Black folks don’t want anything but Tyler Perry. So Books will come out when they come out.

In addition to cutting back on the publishing schedule, I’ve cut back on the number of videos I used to make. I used to make 14 videos a week and do a livestream once a week. Now I’m barely doing 5-7 videos a week and haven’t done a livestream in months. I was doing a lot of this work to show employers how hard a worker I would be and to get a gap off my resume since my last job was in 2008 when I lost my job at City College. I thought if I showed how hard I worked for myself it’d get me a job for someone else or some kind of break. However, none of that matters now.

Perspective changes when you come this close to dying. Publishing books and making videos really don’t matter much when you realize how little time you have left in the world. I read folks diagnosed with Heart failure have maybe 5-10 years at best. And I’m trying to make the most of the little time God has given me.
