Writing for Younger Readers Does Not Mean Dumbed down!

Written for younger readers but not
 dumbed down! 

Some editors, artists and writers in the Comic book Industry believe that writing for kids means writing material that’s dumbed down. Stuff like Scooby-Doo comic books and Manga.

But that’s not the case at all.

I’ve been writing Independent Reader and Young Adult fiction for the past three years. And the subject matter I’ve tackled in my work is anything but dumbed down.

I’ve tackled topics like masturbation, and feminine hygiene in The Thetas and All About Nikki Season- The Sensational second Season. I’ve written about body image in Isis series stories like Isis: The Beauty Myth.  I’ve written about I’ve explored the world fine Art modeling in Isis: All About the Goddess.

And younger readers have read all this content with no problems. Tween and teen boys and girls men and women of all ages all over the world have enjoyed my stories. 

All demographics of audiences the comic book industry desperately needs to pull  it out of a two decade slump.

I didn’t talk down to my readers in my stories. I didn’t patronize readers by dumbing down the subject matter or the characters. 

Too many in the American comic book industry treat children like they’re dumb. Like all they want to read is Scooby Doo or Manga.

I wrote content in such a way that the reader could comprehend the subject matter. That didn't mean I dumbed things down. That meant tailoring the content in such a way that it was appropriate for the audience of tweens and teens I was targeting.

Too many people working in the comic book industry treat younger readers  like they’re dumb. Like all they want to read is Scooby Doo or Manga. Or allegedly  child oriented comics like Archie or Johnny DC. 

Here’s a News Flash:  small children, tweens, and teens are SMART. If they’re passionate about a subject or a character they can read between the lines of the story and understand literary elements just like adults. All a publisher has to do is get them excited about reading.

And from what I’ve seen, they can handle content that features complex subject matter.  It just has to be written in a way that’s age appropriate.

Comic book writers don’t have to write down to younger readers. In fact they’ll see right through that kind of content.

A good writer knows how to scale their content so it’s tailored to fit the audience of readers they’re trying to target. For example, in my Isis series books and All About Nikki screenplay books I often tackle topics subject matter like sex and body image. But I make it a point to NEVER talk down to the reader. The way I figure it, the reader will be smart enough to put two and two together. When these topics are presented to the reader in a tasteful manner that’s explains things clearly, the reader will walk away learning a bit more about the subject than they did before they read my work.  

What younger readers can’t handle is subject matter that’s obscenely inappropriate or just plain excessively violent like today’s comic books.

Younger readers can handle superheroes punching bad guys in the face or someone being knocked out. They can handle seeing a nude body in the context of a medical examination or a bath. They can handle hearing two characters talking about sex and sexuality or even showing characters having a romantic relationship.  They can even handle death. 

What is inappropriate for younger readers is seeing comic panels of someone being eviscerated, decapitated, or mutilated.  Seeing two characters having graphic sex in panels. Seeing graphic pictures of rape and sexual assault. Seeing panels featuring depraved acts like cannibalism. Hearing characters like superheroes using hard profanity like F-Bombs. Seeing “good” characters like superheroes commit murders and have no sense of morals in their lives or in the lives of their secret identities.

It’s content like this that alienates audiences like tweens and teens. It’s what turns away women and girls. All of these audiences buy lots of Young Adult fiction which features similar content to comic books. The Young Adult market that currently buys Monster High, Twilight, Harry Potter, and The Hunger Games could be the next big market for the comic book industry if editors in the comic book industry made serious efforts to capitalize on those demographics with quality content presented in the appropriate context. 

When it comes to content, many in the comic book industry don’t understand it’s not content, but context. In the proper context almost any subject matter can be presented to younger readers. If a creative team handles content in a sensitive and tasteful way they can reach an entirely new generation of readers and introduce them to the comic book medium.

As a writer who has written stories dealing with complex social issues, I know that the best ideas can fall apart due to poor execution. And when a creative team thinks that an idea is childish it’s because they’re not coming at it from the right perspective. Writing for younger readers does not mean writing in a dumbed down way. It means getting creative and finding a way to reach your intended audience with content that appeals to them.

From the show I learned a lot about the changes to the GED or General Equivalency Diploma. It turns out that the GED is going to be a lot harder to get. In the past the GED was the equivalent of an eighth grade education. But the new GED will require students to have the skills of a college bound High school graduate. The New GED exam will feature content such as science, history and advanced math such as algebra.

I also learned that the GED was a program from World War II. Originally meant for soldiers and veterans the GED was a public nonprofit program. Now it’s being run by educational corporation Pearson, who also administers exams such as CompTia’s A+ and NetPlus exams.

In addition to learning about the GED and the privatization of the GED, I learned from the show Pearson is also raising the price of the GED exam. What was once a $50 exam will now cost $300 or so. That’s a lot of money for a person who is working for minimum wage. And in the case of other Pearson exams, if you fail, you lose that money and have to spend more money to take it again.

Even more disturbing is the fact that the GED will no longer be taken with paper and pencils, but the exam will only be taken with computers. So a person will have to be computer literate in order to navigate the menus and have strong analytical and critical thinking skills in order to answer multiple choice exam.

I understand the negative impact these changes to the GED will have on struggling students and poor people. Most entry-level jobs and certain divisions of the military require a minimum of a High School diploma or GED. While the exam may be changing to focus on a more college bound direction, it may be more of a challenge for those who want to go on a road towards a vocational/trade career path.

These changes in the GED seem to show a difference between the haves and the have nots and how having an access to financial resources will determine the difference between living well and living in poverty. So Black people need to get their priorities in order from day one.

The Iceman has talked in great depth about these changes on his YouTube Channels and his blogtalk radio shows. And what he talked about on Tech Talk Thursday was another call to Black folks especially Black men to get their houses in order. To stop chasing women, stop buying junk items like big screen TVs, cars, big speaker stereo systems and Air Jordan sneakers and start investing in their futures. Black people really need to start focusing on education; because education is the foundation to building wealth.

All of what the Iceman, Tyrone and JM McSwain talked about on Tech Talk last Thursday was stuff I learned in an Organizational Behavior class back in Monroe College back in 1994. There, I learned that the job market was going to change. That the unskilled and semiskilled middle class jobs such as factory workers and office workers like administrative assistants were going to be phased out and that there would be only two types of jobs: Jobs for college educated people with specialized skills and low-wage work paying $4.25 to $7.00 an hour.

And in 1997, Tony Brown warned Black people to start buying computers and learning about computer technology on his PBS show Tony Brown’s Journal.

Twenty years later everything I learned in that Organizational Behavior course has come to pass. Adjust the wages of those minimum wage jobs to inflation and they roughly are $4.25 to $7.00 an hour in 1994 dollars.

And close to 20 years later everything is done by computers. So Tony Brown was also correct in his prediction for the future.

And those unskilled and semiskilled jobs like receptionist, Administrative Assistant, Office Asssitant, Clerical and are being phased out as computer programs like Microsoft Office can do the job of five or six workers.

From the show it’s clear to me that the world is changing. And Black people need to change with it if they’re going to have a chance to compete in it. It would be best to heed the advice of someone like The Iceman who has the vision to see where the world is going.

Tech Talk’s interview with The Iceman was a solid show with a lot of valuable information for listeners. It was great to hear Black men having an intelligent conversation about serious issues. My only gripe was that the show was only an hour long. Chinese SIMP Kills Himself Because His Girlfriend Wanted to Shop Till She Dropped

I was reading online about the Chinese man who killed himself after enduring his girlfriend's five-hour shopping spree. According to the article, she wanted to keep shopping for shoes. So he threw all the merchandise over the seventh floor railing and then threw himself over killing himself instantly.

It’s clear to me that along with the credit cards in her purse she also had his testicles in there too.

What happened in that mall in China was a clear case of a “Nice Guy” who had no idea on how to deal with a woman. He was probably the kind of guy who put this woman on a pedestal and worshipped her. To keep her happy, he probably bought her anything she wanted and never said NO to her.

Seriously, what man would stay in a mall with a woman for five hours straight? Most guys will plan out with a woman how many stores they were going to and how long they were staying before heading out the door and make her stick to that schedule.

And when she said one more store, a Real Man would have walked away from her and let her keep shopping. Then after she took a cab home from shopping till she dropped he would have dropped her. Because a woman who can’t respect her man’s feelings has no respect for him.

Better yet, he just wouldn’t have gone shopping with her at all. If she’s got her own job, she and her girlfriends can go shopping together. They can spend all day running around in malls trying on clothes and buying things. Most trips to the mall with a woman are usually five to six hours long. This is why a man tells her to go with her girlfriends. Most men just don’t have the patience to put up with females and their indecisiveness when they’re in the mall shopping. Some women will take as long as twenty to forty minutes just to choose between a white bra and a bone colored one or if it’s a Playtex or a Warner’s. Then they’ll take an hour to choose between six different pairs of heels after trying them on.

That’s no place for a Real Man.

This Chinese man who killed himself clearly was a “Nice Guy”/SIMP to me. All the signs in this case point to a man with limited social skills. A man who couldn’t set boundaries with a woman. A man who let a woman walk all over him like a doormat. A man who couldn’t say NO to a woman.

This man probably was simmering and boiling in frustration quietly for years like most “Nice Guys” and SIMPS do. And when his wife got belligerent with him in public, he finally exploded in an outburst of angry violence. First by ranting emotionally and throwing the merchandise seven stories down, then by killing himself.

If only he had an intervention by Real Men, he could have learned how to solve his problem without going to extremes.

Now a man who knew how to deal with women would have just left her with all those bags and walked away from her after she said “one more store”. Again, if she likes to shop till she drops, then it’s time to drop the woman. Clearly, this woman is a gold digger who values the things she gets from a man rather than the company of that man. To be that insensitive and inconsiderate of his feelings shows how narcissistic and cruel she is.

But again, most men who have experience with women would have just told her to go with her girlfriends. Some activities are guy activities and others are girl activities. Things members of the opposite sex do to bond with the members of their gender. Places no man should be at all.

Part of boundary setting for a man is saying the word NO. Saying NO will not break a woman into a million pieces. Saying NO is a healthy part of establishing boundaries for a relationship. It means that a man is saying what he won’t tolerate from a woman.

And women who respect us will listen the first time when we say NO to them. Too many “Nice Guys”, SIMPS and Manginas think saying NO to a woman is akin to cursing them out.

When it’s exactly what they want to hear.

Most women find it sexy when a man says NO. It shows a man has a backbone and testicles. It shows he has a healthy sense of self-worth. That he values himself enough to say that his boundaries will not be broken and the intangible line in the sand he established will not be crossed. When a man shows that he sees himself as valuable, then that woman will see him as valuable too.

I’m truly sorry for the loss of this poor fellow in China. My condolences go to him and his family. But I believe there’s a lesson here for men all over the world to learn from his death. Don’t be afraid to say NO to a woman. And if she doesn’t respect you saying no to her, then It’s okay to walk away from her. Because a man should never sacrifice his personal power just to be in a relationship. You have a right to be happy too! 

Al Sharpton’s Customer Bill of Rights is a Bill of Sale

 Al Sharpton and Macy*s, Barneys and several High-end retailers here in New York City are rolling out a Customer Bill of Rights.

You may as well call it a Bill of sale. Because no one in management at any of these retailers is going to enforce these policies.

Shawn sees the smokescreen behind this con. And he’s urging Black customers not to fall for the game being played on them by the Civil Rights dinosaurs colluding with these high end retailers.

This Customer Bill of Rights touted by Al Sharpton is nothing more than a superficial publicity stunt meant to pacify the Negro masses. A band aid that does nothing to address bullet wound of the issue of shopping while Black. Something that makes Black people feel safe about shopping at nonblack retailers.

The strongest statement Black people could have made this Holiday season in the aftermath of the Barneys and Macy*s incidents would be to stop shopping at these retailers and start participating in Group Economics. If Black people would just take their money to a Black-Owned business like mine they’d be making a powerful political statement against shopping While Black.

These retailers clearly don’t value Black dollars. So it makes no sense to continue spending them there. That money would better spent invested in Black-owned businesses and helping them become more competitive.

Every dollar spent with a Black-owned business like mineallows those businesses to expand their resources. To create new products. And to hire other Black people. Keeping money in the Black community to help other Black people.

Black folks, we have $1.1 trillion dollars in spending power and we use that money to enrich everyone but Black people. And Since 1964 we’ve gone out every year and spent money with everyone but other Black businesspeople.

Financing our own continuing high poverty and unemployment rates.

Black folks, all these Civil Rights dinosaurs want to do is keep you shopping at nonblack retailers who continue to suck the life out of the Black community because they get rich off racism. As long as the Civil Rights Dinosaurs can shame nonblack people with their race card, they can make money by exploiting Black people.  

Thanks to the failed integrated economic policies of 1964, 97 percent of Black dollars pay for Jews, Whites, Arabs, Hispanics and Asians to live a middle class lifestyle today. And While people like Kayla Phillips and Trayon Christian are buying $350 belts and $2500 shopping bags from retailers like Barneys all we’re doing is paying for those people to send their kids to the best schools and the best colleges in the world.

While Black kids continue to fail in crumbling public schools where 75 percent drop out of high school. Again, investing in the continuing unemployment of the Black community.

Sure the Civil Rights dinosaurs like Al Sharpton benefit from a publicity stunt like the Customer Bill of Rights. They get a little free press, and maybe a donation from those retailers under the table. But while the Black community sings “We Shall Overcome” and begs for the privilege to shop with nonblack businesses like Barneys, Black people continue to remain the poorest people in America 50 years after all the social programs and the trillions of dollars poured into Black communities all across the country.

Clearly the problem with Black people today seems to be more psychological than anything else. When you have to BEG someone to buy their merchandise, with money you WORKED for and EARNED, that speaks volumes about one’s self worth. I’d like to think Black people would value their dignity and self-respect more than $350 belts, $1100 watches and $2500 purses made by nonblack people who don’t give a shit about them and don’t want them wearing their merchandise.

Until Black people begin practicing Group Economics and start supporting each other’s businesses we’ll never be able to truly have any say in the business policies of America. Economic power is how you gain political power. And the only way to truly stop racial profiling in stores is to have the money to buy a seat at the table and make sure the laws are written in a way that benefits Black people.

Black women Pray to God for a Man but Don't WORK ON THEIR FAITH

80 percent of Black women say they are Christians.


72 percent of Black women have children out of wedlock.


Yet many Black women say they pray for God to send them a good man. If they only looked in the mirror they’d see why they don’t have one.


God has oftentimes answered the Black Woman’s prayers. But the only person keeping her from receiving her blessing is the Black woman herself.


Black women often practice religion whenever it’s convenient for them, but don’t take the time to pursue a full relationship with God on His terms.


The Black woman will say she’s a Christian but not follow the tenets of the very Bible she reads. For example, the Bible says Fornication is a sin.


Yet 72 percent of babies are born out of wedlock to the 70 percent of single Christian Black women who claim they pray to God for a “good” man.


Where's the faith in God?


God can’t bless those who don’t follow His Word. Basic logic.


You can’t get a “good” man if you are not “good” yourself. Like attracts like, and in a lot of cases Black women oftentimes wind up attracting the mirror image of themselves because they insist on doing things their way and not trusting in God.


Black women can't find a good man because they have no relationship with the man that's the most important in their lives next to their fathers: GOD. And because they have no relationship with God, they can't find a good man.


In a lot of cases God will send a Black woman a good man. Only Black women don’t want him. They want who the religion of White Jesus has established as their ideal Black man. Brainwashed by Madison Avenue and Hollywood is looking for Denzel Washington, Shemar Moore, and the brotha on the S-Curl Box. Fantasy images of Celebrities and millionaires.


And while she pursues these false gods she ignores all the good decent Black men in her own community. Men who are right for her. Real Men made in God’s own image. Men ready to lead their communities under God’s authority.


But Black women are so busy chasing an ideal from her false gods White Jesus and White Feminism, that they overlook the numerous Real Black men out here. Good Brothers with jobs, businesses and the ability to be strong fathers.


Confused by the false doctrine of White feminism, Black women don’t want these men. No, in their attempt to circumvent God’s natural order they’ll drive these men away.


Why? Because the White feminists told her SHE had to be the leader instead of FOLLOWING the lead of the man God sent for her to work with.


The Black woman prays to The  Living God to help her, but continues to try to reconcile false doctrines of White Jesus and feminism with the Word of God. Putting a square peg into a round hole. The textbook definition of insanity.


The first commandment of the Ten Commandments says Thou shalt have no other Gods before God. But the Black woman Puts White Jesus and the doctrine of White Feminism FIRST before God.


God’s natural order is that men lead women and women follow men . But in today’s world Black women are taught that Women lead and men follow. And since no man can circumvent God’s natural order, these women wind up single and miserable.


Full of hubris, The Black woman believes she can do better than God’s natural order. It’s this arrogant way of thinking that the Black woman can’t hold out on God for better.


Sometimes God wants Black women to wait. Sometimes Black women just aren’t ready for marriage. Sure, they may have money, education and material success, but on the inside they’re not emotionally mature enough or spiritually strong enough to handle a relationship with a man.


And while she’s waiting, He’s trying to work things out in her life to get her to that point where she’s spiritually mature enough where she’ll be ready for a relationship with a man that’s right for her.


But because the Black woman is greedy and impatient, she has to have her relationships on her terms. She doesn’t want to wait for God. No, she wants it NOW.


And this is why she winds up with the Pookies, the Ray-Rays, the Shaheems and the Thugs, dope dealers and the bad boys. Stranded in the Dusty Negro pool with four kids by three different dudes. Stranded in a HELL where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth from her illegitimate kids and that baby daddy and his drama.


And like the five foolish virgins who weren’t prepared for the bridegroom because they forgot to take oil with them, she misses out on the good man God has ready to receive her. He passes her by when he sees her with four kids by three dudes or brainwashed by the false doctrines of White Jesus.


In order for God to facilitate and provide us with what’s right for us, we need to be in the right place at the right time. Unfortunately, most Black women get sidetracked and distracted by Madison Avenue and Hollywood before God can bless them.


God has a plan for Black women. He wants the very best for Black women. But it’s oftentimes Black women who get in God’s way and prevent him from blessing them with the man who is the right leader for them. Black women need to stop listening to the false doctrines of Feminism and White Jesus and start listening to the true Word of God. Once they get their relationship with God right, He’ll send them the man that’s right for them, and they’ll find him. 

The AFROSIMPTRICKS™ PART 2 – The BOHOE CHICK

In a previous blog I talked about the AFROSIMPTRICK male, a Bitch-Made™ Mama’s boy who goes out and puts on a Made in Taiwan Dashiki and talks about protecting the “Black queens” and helping the community while he courts nonblack women and goes out and spends money with every other business but a Black-owned one. Now I’ll discuss his female counterpart the BOHOE.

What is a BOHOE? A BOHOE is a Black woman who runs around talking about Pro Blackness on the outside, but is secretly a fan of White Supremacy on the inside. She can easily be identified her by her natural hairstyles such as braids, afros, and dreadlocks, her Made in China caftan and her Gucci sandals. She goes by Pseudoafrocnetric names like Amiri Shabazz Brown and Masala Moon Skye. 

She'll usually be employed in the arts as a freelancer doing things like painting, one-woman shows, or plays that she's always in the process of working on. When are these projects ever finished? Usually: NEVER. 

But somehow she always finds a SIMP with big pockets to fund them and her $7 coffee house lattes, and the cell phone bill of the iphone she carries in her$500  Gucci purse. BOHOES love to talk about going back to Africa, to Black people but love their American amenities.  

A BOHOE’s hobbies include going to coffee houses, reciting poetry, quoting Black feminists and sipping herbal tea. BOHOES are known for their strict stance on being vegetarians and only eating what comes from the earth when she’s around other Black people.

The BOHOE loves to talk about how she is a queen. A woman of virtue. And how Black men and Black women need to worship her like the great Queens of Africa. BOHOES believe they are superior to other Black people because she has discovered “The way” and that other Black people are “lost.” And need her “guidance” to find themselves. How Black people are so ignorant they are and how they need to read a book and read about their history.

She’s the type to shame other Black women who wear processed hair and wear business clothes. She’ll talk about how they’re sellouts and traitors to the race. How they serve a White Jesus (ok, this is true) and she needs to find their inner goddess and their spiritual energy to become a strong Black woman like her.

She’s also the type to shame Black men who she dates and gets involved with. When they ask to date her she'll insist on a long courtship. And when they ask for her to have a sexual relationship with them, she’ll talk all about chastity and virtue, and being disciplined. She’ll talk about how Black men have to be like African kings who would have the discipline to wait for marriage to be with her the African Queen like her.

She’ll tell everyone in the Black community that they need to support her poetry and art projects such as her one-woman shows, her art gallery projects, or her films. And if they don’t they’re Uncle Toms and Handkerchief heads.

All the while talking on her $500 iPhone and sipping on her $7 latte at while she does business in a White-owned coffee house.

That’s right The BOHOE is a hypocrite. A Negro Bed Wench looking to get ahead at the expense of Black people. Ask her to support another black-owned business and she'll tell you that those Black folks have to pull themselves up by their bootstraps like she does. 

BOHOES talk all about virtue and Black Pride in the presence of Black women and Black men, but when one examines her ACTIONS more closely, they see she’s a bigger sellout than Oprah Winfrey, Shondra Rhimes and Halle Berry combined.

Usually, the BOHOE does her best not to spend much time around Black people. No, she spends most of her time around White people.

The BOHOE loves her position as a token in the White community. Her goal by presenting an image of “natural Blackness” is to be the “representative” of what Black people are to White people.

And when she gets around White people, especially White men all of a sudden her values CHANGE.

In the presence of White women, she becomes a giggling bimbo. White girls can sit around her tossing around racial slurs like nigger, call Blacks you people and talk about a Black man’s penis size and instead of standing up for their kings, these BOHOE chicks will sit there and smile and nod.
