E'steem: Horror In The Hamptons Sample Chapter

Dropping a sample chapter of the new E'steem series book, E'steem: Horror in The Hamptons!

Chapter 9

The moon rises high in the night sky as I step out of the backseat of the Cadillac Escalade I’m riding in. As I peer up at the Morris Phillips Tower, I wonder if John Haynes will be home at this hour. I’m hoping if I make my case to him, he’ll be persuaded to help Lucretia.

Lucretia would love to have me subdue and kidnap John Haynes and his consort. However, I won’t have The New York Brood as an accomplice in any of the criminal activity she’s planning. While I know it may be difficult to get John to come to the house due to his numerous encounters with the undead, I would like to believe he’d be able settle this affair without any involvement of the NYPD’s Supernatural affairs division. The last thing I need is a scandal that gets back to Transylvania.

I gesture to my driver to leave. After he drives off, I look through the tall glass doors at the security team in the lobby. With The Brood being Persona Non Grata with Mr. Haynes, I doubt I’d be able to get past these guards. So I’ll have to approach John directly. With a thought I make my body fade into a mist. As my body starts to become lighter than air, I begin floating up the side of the art deco skyscraper I count sixty-six floors until I reach the top floor where the Penthouse is. As I peer into the picture windows of the living room, I spot John and his assistant E’steem sitting in the living room of the penthouse. The husky toast colored man wearing a flat top fade haircut, forest green shirt, black jeans and Chelsea boots and the tall voluptuous almond colored raven haired woman wearing a red wrap dress and heels are making their plans for Saturday night. I’m hoping they’ll be persuaded to change them when they hear Lucretia’s story. “So what movies are we watching on Tubi tonight John?” E’steem asks him.

Before John can answer her question, I make my body swirl into a fog that slips through the sliding glass doors of the balcony. When I make my body solid to stand in front of them, I’m met with surprised looks by the couple. “I’m hoping I can persuade you into changing your plans for this evening Mr. Haynes.”

 Chapter 3

Whose soul do I want to devour today?

I’m pondering what woman will be on the menu as I stroll into the Java Joint. While the coffee here is good, the selection of ladies is even better. I’m wondering who I’ll be able to pick up this afternoon.

As I step onto the bustling dining room of the Hell’s Kitchen coffee house, I find my favorite table in the corner of the room near the picture window is still available. I stroll over to it, drop my Italian leather messenger bag on it, and take out my tablet. While it wakes out of sleep mode, I slide into my chair check out all the lovely ladies on the floor. Whole lot of hotties here today. I wonder who I’ll approach first.

In a few moments Claudius, the Java Joint’s barista of the month rushes from around the counter to approach me. It’s a shame he’s wasting all his time trying to play pastor instead of playing the field. The handsome honey colored man dressed in a white shirt, black apron, black slacks and trainers cuts a cold look at me as he gets ready to take my order. “You coming to get what’s on the menu or to get someone to take out?” Claudius asks.

“What’s wrong Claud?” I retort. “I don’t get the sales pitch?”

“My coffee shop isn’t your meet market Keith.”

What can I say? This is my favorite place to get me some soul food. “Still got the bleeding heart over D’lilah, Samson?” I taunt.

Claudius’ hands clench into fists on the dig. “I treated her better than you treat any of the women you get involved with-”

“I’m just doing what an Incubus does.” I say. “Loving them and leaving them with broken hearts and corrupted souls. You’re the one who is remiss in his duties.”

Claud scowls on the dig. “Don’t you even care about any of the women you get in your bed?”

As long as my rank rises in The Legion with each soul I take I could care less about their lives. “Problem is you cared about them too much Claud.” I reply shaking my head. “I still can’t believe you walked away from a six-figure job and endless supply of panties to serve coffee and cake to the good Christians you play Church with.”

“I understand the value of my soul-”

I would never have forsaken The Lord like he did. “If you were working with what you had, you’d still be in the running for an executive spot at Lucerne and bedding down the finest females. But you’d rather try to play pastor-”

Claud burns on the dig. “I’m trying to save souls-”

“You can’t save who wants to stay lost.”

Claud’s hands clench into fists. He knows I’m right. At the end of the day it’s their choice to get involved with me. “I wish I could stop you-”

“But that would blow your cover with the humans.”

Claudius seethes with anger when he sees he can’t win the argument with me. “If you’re gonna stay here you need to order something.”

May as well get a snack before I pick up a main course. “Get me a mocha caramel latte with two pumps of vanilla cream and a blueberry scone.”

“Coming right up.” Claudius spits.

As Claudius storms back to the counter to put my order in I call out to him. “Oh and Claud?”

“Yeah?”

“Don’t mess with my business or I’ll make sure you won’t be able to have church around here.”
