John Haynes: At Death’s Door Comic Progress Report

Cover Concept!
One of the projects I’ve been working on for 2022 is the first John Haynes Comic book, John Haynes: At Death’s Door. A follow up to the popular and critically acclaimed John Haynes: A Conversation With Death, this comic features The Man Who Rules The World taking on Thanatos, the Greek God of death.

After getting in touch with a comic artist I spent the last few months working on model sheets for all the characters featured in the story.

Death is partially inspired by DC Vertigo’s Death from the Sandman and her look is inspired by Marvel’s Death from the Infinity Gauntlet comics. Decided to make Death a Black Goth with natural hair in this comic so DC won’t sue me. And I like Black Goths. Cause Black Goths are AWESOME.

Also gave her a purple robe because the story takes place in the morning.

Thanatos is partially inspired by Goth Guys I’ve seen in YouTube Videos and online. And the Marilyn Manson-esque Riddler from the 2000s The Batman. Decicded to give him a slim build and a Greek Goth asthetic with a black toga, black bracers and New Rock Sandals to show how dark he is.

Zeus was just an idea I came up with in my head. I wanted him to be big and burly and looking like a powerhouse. A contrast to Thanatos’ slim build. He kinda looks like Hook hand Aquaman, but that’s how I see him.

Did a New John Haynes Model sheet. Wanted to try to make him a bit more proportional than my previous model. Still trying to work out a strong looking male figure.

Also did a new E’steem model sheet to go along with John’s. Went with a different freehand approach to drawing her this time.  Tried to capture some of Salli Richardson’s likeness in her face like I usually do,

Also did a sketch of the Morris Phillips Penthouse living room, one of the locations featured in the story. This is the first time I drew image of the Penthouse. Did my best to make it come out how imagined in my head. The Penthouse living room has an elevator, a waterfall with a koi pond, a picture of Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup, big screen TV, Fireplace and picture windows. Wanted it to be a mansion in the sky, a paradise.

So far the script for John Haynes: At Death’s Door is complete. All the model sheets are done. Both the regular and variant cover concepts have been drawn and colored. And I’ve hired Mike Williams to design the variant cover. Just waiting for the artist I got in touch with to get back to me. Hopefully, we’ll be able to get this project started soon! Now the only question is: do I want to do another crowdfunding project or do I want to take it straight to Amazon?
